LOS ANGELES, June 11, 2015 /Daily Offbeat/ -- The Misfits, who spent so much of their studio time channeling old horror movies, are now playing Dr. Frankenstein themselves. The band doesn't want to tour alone, every monster needs a mate. So on the eighth or ninth day, the SHE DEMONS were created. And it was good.
Jerry Only looked all over Los Angeles to find the all-girl band for a new generation.
“Women are a strong presence in music,” Only told iconvsicon.com. “When I was a kid I saw Susie Quatro and The Runaways, and the guys loved them but the girls also admired them. Today, young girls will want to be She Demons. I see these very talented girls as the kind kids can look up to. They are so talented and focused.”
The She Demons is an all-girl rock group culled from hard rocking California outfits who answered the call to audition in April. The ad wanted to cross the Ronettes with the Ramones and warned “‘Beauty Deadly and Precise’ Beware or Be Devoured…you have been warned.”
Only assembled Priya Panda from the band Diemonds on vocals; multi-instrumentalist Constance Day on guitar and vocals; The actress, model and musician Alicia Vigil on bass. Vigil has performed with Gene Simmons and Bruce Kulick and starred in movie “Legion of the Black.”
He also pulled in Jessica Goodwin from the bands Under Fire and Omniflux on drums and Nylon Pink’s lead guitarist and vocalist Kiki Wongo on guitar, Wongo also backed Taylor Swift at the 2014 VMAs as well as Usher and Bret Michaels.
The Gutter Dollz, a Suffolk County, N.Y. band, more than graciously shared their audition and outtakes from the auditions on YouTube. Here are the outtakes, you can find their audition video at their YouTube page. They also have a live cover of the Misfits’ “Astro Zombies,” so now you have to click.
The Misfits will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary soon and the She Demons will join them on their world tour which will focus on the 1977-1983 era.
Like The Misfits, She Demons take some inspiration from celluloid. They have a song called “B-Movie” that’s as chock full of monster movie references as “Science Fiction Double Feature” from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” or The Fabulous Poodles’ “B-Movies.”
The classic stranded-on-a-deserted-island-with-Nazi-scientists B-Movie, “She Demons,” was an classic indie sci-fi cult favorite from 1958. It was written and directed by Richard E. Cunha, who also made “Missile to the Moon: and “Frankenstein’s Daughter.” He shot it in under a week.
She Demons also reportedly put their stamp on Motown songs and the Crystals classic “He’s a Rebel,” written by Gene Pitney. So, when The She Demons get some tracks up, I’m going to sync this, the drums are killer.
The She Demons will release their debut record in Fall 2015.
