FRESNO, Calif., Feb. 9, 2015 /Daily Offbeat/ -- Charles Manson is singing the wedding bell blues. The mastermind behind the Tate-LoBianco killings was set to marry 26-year-old devotee Afton Elaine Burton. AKA Star, but she didn't file the papers in time.
According to Reuters (via Yahoo News), said the 90-day marriage license Afton Elaine Burton got last late last year expired. Last weekend was couple’s last chance to hold a wedding inside a visiting room at California State Prison.
“The license expires on February 5. Inmate weddings must happen during visiting times. There are no visiting times scheduled between now and February 5,” California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Jeffrey Callison told AFP.
The couple will have to register for a new Kings County marriage. New York City photo agency editor James McGrath, who is in contact with Burton, said she intends to get another 90-day license and go ahead with the marriage.
According to the New York Post, it was Manson, 80, who broke the engagement, saying, in effect he’d marry Star over his dead body.
In the wedding document that Manson and Burton signed, she would get possession of Manson’s body when he dies. According to the report Burton and a friend named Craig Hammond wanted to dispay Manson’s remains in a glass crypt. According to journalist Daniel Simone, it would be a moneymaking tourist trap, like Lenin’s Tomb in Moscow.
“He didn’t give them a yes, he didn’t give them a no. He sort of strung them along,” said Simone.
Burton reportedly says she loves Manson. She traveled across the country and has lived Central California prison for nine years.
Burton runs a website called “Release Charles Manson Now,” according to the website: “We KNOW Charles Manson was not given his rights in a court of law, and that he has been illegally incarcerated by the California Department of Corrections for the past 40 years. This blatant injustice will no longer be tolerated. Thousands of people around the world understand that Manson has been illegally tried in and by the media. He is obviously a political prisoner.”
Charles Manson is probably the most infamous convicted killer of all time. He led an apocalyptic cult-like group called the Manson family in California in the late sixties. Manson, who had been in prisons most of his life, believed a race war was imminent that would bring on an apocalypse. Manson led the group to commit a series of 7 murders, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski. Manson believed the crimes would be blamed on African Americans, in the hope of sparking what he termed a “Helter Skelter” race war. After a lengthy trial Manson and four of his followers were convicted. He was sentenced to death in 1969 along with four of his disciples Manson is serving life in prison. Manson applied for parole in 2012 but was denied. He will be eligible to apply again in 2027.
Manson was married twice before he was jailed. He was married to Rosalie Jean Willis from 1955 to 1958. He was to married Candy Stevens between 1959 and 1963.
